LAPD adds Zero MMX electric motorcycle to patrol fleet
0 The Los Angeles Police Department has added a new vehicle to its fleet -- the Zero MMX electric motorcycle. This bike is made for law enforcement and military use, and comes with many benefits, not the least of which is being more environmentally friendly
The Zero MMX is an entirely electric bike running a Z-Force motor, which according to the police department costs less than 50 cents to charge. This saves money substantially over the cost of gasoline vehicles, and comes with the benefits of maintenance-free powertrain.
The overall cost of operation is said to be low, and the LAPD's officers will gain an "added tactical advantage while on patrol". The bikes are designed so that emergency lights can be affixed to the vehicle, as well as storage devices for adding items for patrol or emergency response.
According to Zero Motorcycles, their law enforcement and military electric bikes are "nearly silent" and zero emission, designed to pump out low levels of heat, and offering "instant torque". The motorcycles have a relative fuel cost of one penny per mile of travel.
