Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 totes 1-inch image sensor, 4K

Panasonic has introduced a new digital camera, the Lumix FZ1000. This latest entrant falls into the compact camera category, and as such holds the distinction as first of its kind with the ability to record Ultra HD 4k videos. This is complemented by a large 1-inch image sensor.

The Lumix FZ1000 has a high sensitivity MOS sensor offering 20.1-megapixels, the combination of which promises low noise levels despite high ISO levels. Under the hood is a Venus Engine, which Panasonic says is designed with "multiple noise reduction systems", including Random Filter and Aperture Filter.

One of its most notable features is its ability to record videos in up to QFHD 4k (3840 x 2160) in 30fps in MPEG-4 format. Lesser recording options are also available, including Full HD at up to 120fps. The video recording can be used in conjunction with the 16x optical zoom and a 5-axis HYBRID optical image stabilization.

The new camera also features Depth From Defocus technology, which aids in taking quick in-focus shots. There's a burst shooting option at 12fps for those want to take full-resolution images. The shutter speed can be set to as fast as 1/16,000.

Other specs include a rear 3-inch hinged LCD, as well as 802.11 b/g/n and NFC for shuttling images to other devices easily. Price and availability haven't been detailed.
