Rumors recently began swirling that some users where loosing Live account privileges with early indications claiming the loss of privileges had to do with using profanity on Skype video calls. Microsoft has stepped in to kill that particular rumor.
However, in killing the rumor that using naughty words on Skype video calls, Microsoft did confirm it would suspend Xbox One user accounts if users upload video with profanity. Microsoft said that uploading videos with the Upload Studio feature that have “excessive profanity” could cause the loss of some or all of the features of your account.
Microsoft offered no indication of how it tracks profanity in the video or what is deemed excessive. Presumably, Microsoft is using some sort of automated check. The fact that Microsoft is trying to force users to obey its idea of acceptable communications will bother some people.
Anyone who plays games on Live or any other service with in-game chats has heard this language before. Gamers rarely talk nicely to each other during games.
Microsoft’s statement reads:
To be clear, the Xbox Live Policy & Enforcement team does not monitor direct peer-to-peer communications like Skype chats and calls. Also, we take Code of Conduct moderation via Upload Studio very seriously. We want a clean, safe and fun environment for all users. Excessive profanity as well as other Code of Conduct violations will be enforced upon and result in suspension of some or all privileges on Xbox Live. We remain committed to preserving and promoting a safe, secure and enjoyable experience for all of our Xbox Live members.
